De Opdrachtomschrijving
Ever experienced a flight delay? You literally see your aircraft out the window, and wonder: “why haven’t we started boarding yet?” The reality is flights get delayed all the time, and for many different reasons. The challenge is to prevent delays from cascading into much larger problems, leading to all sorts of disruptions to future dependent parties and processes. Delays are not only (painfully) inconvenient, they can also be expensive for the parties involved.
What if we can use modern data-science and engineering to get a better understanding of the underlying problem? Perhaps gain insights to help mitigate or even prevent certain delay types from happening? That’s where our solution, Deep Turnaround, comes into play!
Deep Turnaround uses “machine vision” (AI) to generate previously unknown data points on the aircraft turnaround[*] process ([*] a notorious source of delays).
These live data points can then be shared with relevant airport parties to facilitate data-driven decision making.
Do you want to be a part of this exciting new solution!?

About your role:
As a Senior Data Engineer, you will focus on developing, scaling, and continuously improving the Deep Turnaround data platform and work with the Engineering team to develop an Engineering strategy for the coming years. You’ll work closely with other engineers to design and build robust data pipelines, improve platform performance and reliability, and turn operational insights into concrete platform improvements. While you’ll contribute to integrations for new airport deployments, the emphasis is on reducing manual onboarding effort through better architecture, tooling, and automation.
As a Data Engineer, you’re expected to actively propose and implement improvements, stay current with emerging technologies, and help shape the technical direction of the platform over the coming years—balancing short-term impact with long-term maintainability.
– New airports: act as the technical point of contact during the discovery and early integration phases; escalate architecture and complex rollouts to the lead data engineer while delivering the enabling components (secure data exchange, small services, checks).
– Current platform: elevate the reliability baseline—monitoring, alerting, dashboards, and standard operating procedures—so fewer issues require intervention.
Your tasks:
– Set up secure data exchange for customers (e.g., sftp/ftp endpoints, APIS/webhooks, VPN/firewall rules), following our standards and under guidance.
– Build and maintain small integration services in Go (preferred) or Python to transform and forward events (Kafka/AMQP → REST/DB).
– Enhance monitoring and observability (Prometheus/Grafana, logs, traces), define SLOS, and maintain actionable dashboards.
– Create and develop runbooks, checklists, and templates to streamline airport onboarding and reduce ad-hoc support.
– Provide clear documentation of the engineering platform
– Contribute to schema governance and CI/CD (Gitlab/Github Actions); maintain configs that are reproducible and peer reviewed.
– Manage first-line production triage for your integrations; conduct post-mortems and transform fixes into automation/docs
– Contribute and co-create the technical vision of the Deep Turnaround platform together with the Engineering team and other teams (data science- and front-end/backend team)
– Integrate and configure external snapshot services on external VM’s to the Deep Turnaround platform
– On-call duties 24/7 (1 week every x weeks) for customer P1 support
– Guide the Engineering team and be Responsible as sr. Engineer to set up an engineering strategy and keep oversight on other Engineers in the team.
– Work with our customers as single point of contact during the technical implementation phase as “lead implementation Engineer”
